NEW ANDROID VERSION

LOLI POP

check back again in the next few days when we add in phone features and a final score. New release date information for Samsung and Sony devices has also been included.
Android Lollipop is here, and it's brought a raft of new changes. It's got radical new design, 5000 new APIs and it's going beyond the mobile form factor.
Android 5.0 is contextually aware of its surroundings, plus voice is a major input source as the search giant looks towards devices such as Glass and smart watches.

Android Lollipop Material Design

The big news for Android Lollipop is the change to the way it looks - and it's going well beyond the mobile phone to the tablet, TV screen, watch and even the car.
The new Material Design is strange in that it bucks a trend at the moment - yes, it's flat, but it's heavily based on making every animation, every ripple, every shadow look real, which is something that most brands are shying away from.

Google tells us that this feels more intuitive, which means that there are shadow gradients, 3D tiles that slide over one another and most importantly: access for developers to use this for themselves on their apps.
The idea is obvious: remove the fragmented way Android looks and bring consistency to the app world no matter what device you're on. Google intends to create an expansive ecosystem that will allow you to start a song on one device, move to another room, pick up a separate Android device and continue right where you left off.
The Roboto font has been updated too, so everything from watch to TV to mobile looks the same.

Every animation on screen will be allowed to connect to one another - so there's no 'teleportation between apps'. The home, back and multi-tasking window buttons on Android 5.0 have been refined too, they're now geometric shapes which spin depending on what the app needs them for and overall this is a massive step forward for a cleaner, more intuitive-looking version of Google's mobile platform.
It's full of little flourishes and details too, for example the settings icon will spin round when you pull down the notifications screen. It's clear that a lot of thought has gone in to the changes, it's not just easier to use but is also likely to make you want to use it more, as every screen and every tap is a pleasure.

If you don't have Android Lollipop on your device yet then to get a taste of Material Design now just head on over to the Play Store on an Android device, as the material design update is available for it and a host of Google's own apps including Chrome, Maps, Calendar, Gmail and many more.

Notifications and lock screen

Notifications on Android Lollipop have been given an overhaul, so only the more relevant information about your apps is presented.
You can even adjust the OS to display notifications from the most important people and apps during the evening hours or an important meeting. The notification panel is being merged with the lockscreen, so you can see what's going on as you pick up the phone and get where you need to be with intuitive gestures- a double tap to open an app or a swipe to clear a notification.
Imagine that the lockscreen is similar to the notifications panel now, and you're pretty much there. That's not to say that the main notifications screen is gone, that's still there too and has undergone some changes of its own.
Android Lollipop will learn from you for example, working out what you look at and interact with more often to prioritise that notification.

As well as getting some notification action the lockscreen on Android 5.0 is also getting smarter - if you've got a specific location set up, or are wearing a Bluetooth device or have an NFC sticker, the phone will recognise you and unlock without a PIN.
Move away or take your watch off and you'll need to tap or swipe in a code when you unlock - or you can even use your voice.
Google has also improved Face Unlock with the Trusted Face feature, which is faster and more accurate than ever. It starts looking for your face as soon as you attempt to unlock your phone, so there's no waiting around and in our tests we found that it even works in poor lighting a lot of the time.

Frameless Smartphone

Hands on with Sharp AQUOS Crystal, An Affordable and Frameless Smartphone

Sharp hasn’t been the biggest player in the smartphone market, but they are definitely impressing us with their new AQUOS Crystal smartphone for Sprint. For starters, this phone has just what we have been dreaming about – and that is a five-inch borderless HD display that goes right to the edge of the phone. The result is a mobile experience that is more immersive, and dear we say it – TV like. Unfortunately, the resolution is just 1280×720, which is solid, but could be even better.
But it’s not just the visuals that impresses with the AQUOS Crystal smartphone – but also the audio. On the audio front, the phone is equipped with Harman Kardon Clari-Fi and LiveStage audio technologies for a more lifelike listening experience. Meanwhile, Clari-fi promises to improve digital sound quality by restoring compressed digital music, which is what most of us are indeed listening to on our phones.
And you know how phone speakers never seem to play loud enough? A Direct Wave receiver inside the phone Direct Wave Receiver uses the entire panel surface of the phone to create sound.
Other specs for the phone are pretty impressive too – the phone packs in an 8MP camera that sports a special Night Catch mode for brightening up the subject and background – even in the dark.

The phone also comes bundled with OfficeSuite so that you can edit Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint docs on the go.
The phone itself measures 5.16 x 2.6 x 0.40 inches and weighs just 4.97 ounces, so it’s not too hefty at all. The battery itself is a 2,040mAh Lithium-Ion battery. You get all of this powered by a 1.2GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal expandable storage.
The Sharp QUOS phone will be available soon from Sprint, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile. Pricing for the phone is also surprisingly very affordably, especially since it’s also targeting the prepaid market. For prepaid users, the phone will cost just $150. Those looking to sign up for a contract with Sprint will get it for just $20 – or they can pay it out over 24 months for $10 a month.

What is MTK platform?

What is MTK platform?

MTK platform refers to the mobile chipset or platform developed by MediaTek Inc. of Taiwan. Originally famous for being a fabless semiconductor-based company, MediaTek has increasingly become popular in the wireless phone industry with its so-called MTK platform. This mobile platform basically works more like a true personal computer because it is able to integrate the mobile device’s main CPU or central processing unit with its graphics or videocard and the corresponding wireless chip. All these components are rolled into one MTK mobile platform to produce feature enhancements in the multimedia environment, wireless connectivity, and overall phone performance and battery life. MTK chipsets are also considered to be great for mobile phone manufacturers because of possible lower upgrading costs and industry-leading boost in performance.
Phones that are equipped with dual-core processing power have become quite the norm in the smartphone arena. Under the MTK chipset or mobile platform, the company boasts of even better performance with the integration of the phone’s processing power with the graphics component and the wireless communication chip. Browsing is said to be made very easy and fast with application loading boosted substantially in terms of graphics display and image processing.

The MTK mobile platform is said to work best for people who prefer multi-tasking in their phones. Those that need to open several applications all at once can barely notice that their mobile phones are working so hard because of the advanced technology involved in the mobile platform or chipset. Some people even compare the latest in MTK platform-equipped smartphones as better than the newest offerings on the current Android and iOS environments. By late 2013, Mediatek is able to release its latest version of the MTK mobile platform with the industry’s first ever 8-core chipset. 8 processing powerhouses that are capable of 2GHz computing speeds is one great future for the growing MTK mobile platform

APN settings for mobile broadband operators in Sri Lanka

Access Point Name (APN) is a computer and mobile INTERNET protocol that typically allows a user's computer to access the Internet using the mobile phone network.

If you use a dongle or a HSDPA modem to access Internet, knowing the these APN for particular network operator is important. Most of dongles come along with per-installed network manager software which can automatically run and take particular network setting from the inserted SIM under Microsoft windows environment.

If you are using Linux or Ubuntu, the network manager software (comes with dongle) will do nothing for you and you need to setup your mobile broadband manually. Knowing the particular APN (Access point name) is so important since it may effect your Internet usage by defining the usage plan. Mobile broad band service providers in Sri lanka are as follows.
